Short answer: the best e-bike for heavy riders has a high maximum load, a strong frame, powerful motors and good brakes. Many standard e-bikes are built for riders up to about 100 kg, and they wear out quickly beyond that. In this guide, we show you the 7 things to check, so you buy a bike that stays safe and comfortable for years.
None of this is about fitness. Tall riders, broad-shouldered riders and anyone carrying luggage face the same questions. After all, the total weight on the bike is what counts.
1. Maximum load: the first thing to check on an e-bike for heavy riders
Every e-bike has a maximum load. This is the total weight the bike is designed to carry: you, your clothes, your bag and any luggage together.
Always leave some margin. For example, if you weigh 110 kg and carry a 10 kg bag, look for a bike rated well above 120 kg. Riding close to the limit every day wears out wheels, bearings and brakes faster.
The Shengmilo S600 PRO is rated for a maximum load of 300 kg by the manufacturer. That leaves a large safety margin, even with luggage on the rear rack. By comparison, the S900 PRO is rated for 150 kg.
2. A strong frame
The frame carries all the weight, so it must be stiff and strong. Look for thick tubes, solid welds and a frame designed for fat tires, because those frames are built heavier from the start.
On the S600 PRO, the underside of the frame has been thickened compared with the original S600. As a result, the extra strength sits exactly where the load is highest. The rear rack is also made of thickened metal, so it can carry real luggage.
3. Enough motor power
A heavier load needs more power, especially uphill. A single 250W motor, for instance, can feel weak with a heavy rider on a steep street.
The S600 PRO uses two 1000W motors, one in each wheel, with 2 × 80 N·m of torque. Because both wheels drive, the bike pulls steadily on climbs without straining one motor. For heavier riders, this is the biggest difference you will feel on the first hill.
4. Brakes that stop with confidence
More weight means more energy to stop. Good disc brakes are therefore essential, and hydraulic brakes are the best choice for heavy loads.
The S600 PRO has hydraulic disc brakes on both wheels. When you pull a brake lever, the motors cut out automatically. In practice, that means short, controlled stops, also when riding downhill with luggage.
Whatever bike you choose, have the brakes checked regularly. Heavier riders wear brake pads faster, which is completely normal.
5. Fat tires spread the load
Fat tires are a big advantage for heavier riders. Their wide contact patch spreads the weight over a larger area, so the bike feels stable and sure-footed.
The S600 PRO rides on 26 × 3.0 all-terrain fat tires with a thicker tread. Consequently, they absorb bumps, grip well on loose ground and are less likely to get pinch flats.
Tip: heavier riders should use a higher tire pressure on asphalt. It reduces wear and improves range. However, never exceed the maximum pressure printed on the tire.
6. Suspension that protects your body
On a rigid bike, every pothole goes straight into your wrists, back and knees. Extra body weight makes those hits harder.
Full suspension, front and rear, makes the ride much smoother. The S600 PRO combines a double-shoulder front fork with a rear shock absorber. That is one of the reasons heavier and older riders choose it. After an hour on rough roads, the difference is obvious.
7. A battery big enough for the extra load
More weight uses more energy, so range drops. For example, a bike that reaches 50 km on the throttle with a light rider may reach 35–40 km with a heavy rider and luggage.
A large battery compensates for this. The S600 PRO has a 1200Wh battery, which is roughly twice what many standard e-bikes carry. For real numbers by riding style, see our guide How far can you really go on a 1200Wh battery?
Will the bike fit my height?
Weight is only half the story; the bike must also fit you. So, check the recommended rider height and make sure you can reach the ground comfortably when stopped.
The S600 PRO suits riders from [CHECK: rider height range, e.g. 165–200 cm]. If you are unsure, send our support team your height and inside leg length, and we will tell you honestly whether it fits.
Quick checklist: e-bike for heavy riders
- Maximum load well above your total weight
- Strong, reinforced frame
- Enough motor power for your hills
- Hydraulic disc brakes
- Wide fat tires
- Full suspension
- A battery of 1000Wh or more
The bottom line
An e-bike for heavy riders doesn’t have to be expensive, but it must be built for the job. First, check the maximum load. Then look at frame, power, brakes, tires, suspension and battery.
The Shengmilo S600 PRO ticks every box on that list: a 300 kg maximum load, two 1000W motors, a reinforced frame, hydraulic brakes, fat tires, full suspension and a 1200Wh battery. It costs €1,389 with free delivery in 3–7 working days. Still comparing models? Read S600 PRO vs S900 PRO: which one is right for you?
