How Far Can You Really Go on a 1200Wh Battery?

Short answer: on a 1200Wh battery, most riders go between 50 and 90 km on one charge. The exact 1200Wh battery range depends on how you ride: pedalling along gets you much further than using the throttle only. In this guide, we explain the real numbers, what drains your battery, and how to ride further.

We use the Shengmilo S600 PRO as the example, because its new 48V 25Ah battery holds exactly 1200Wh.

What does 1200Wh actually mean?

Wh stands for watt-hours. It tells you how much energy the battery stores, much like litres in a fuel tank. In other words, the bigger the number, the further you can ride. You can read more about the unit on Wikipedia.

You can also calculate it yourself: volts × amp-hours = watt-hours. For the S600 PRO, that is 48V × 25Ah = 1200Wh.

For comparison, many e-bikes in shops have batteries of 500–700Wh. A 1200Wh battery, therefore, stores roughly twice as much energy. The original S600 had 840Wh, so the S600 PRO carries 43% more, at the same price.

Real 1200Wh battery range by riding style

An e-bike uses a certain amount of energy per kilometre. Divide 1200Wh by that number, and you get your range. Here are typical values for a powerful fat tire e-bike:

Riding styleTypical use per kmEstimated range
Low pedal assist, flat roads10–13 Wh/km90–120 km
Medium pedal assist, mixed terrain14–18 Wh/km65–85 km
Throttle only, no pedalling22–26 Wh/km45–55 km
Steep hills or heavy load, throttle only30+ Wh/km40 km or less

These are estimates, not promises. Your own numbers will vary with weight, weather and terrain. Still, they match the manufacturer’s figures for the S600 PRO: about 50 km on electric power alone, and 90 km or more when you pedal along.

What drains an e-bike battery faster?

Several things affect your 1200Wh battery range. Some you control; others you don’t.

Riding with the throttle only

Without pedalling, the motors do all the work. That is comfortable, but it also uses the most energy.

Hills

Climbing takes far more power than riding on flat ground. For example, a hilly 30 km route can use as much battery as 50 km on the flat.

Total weight

A heavier rider, a child seat or full shopping bags all increase energy use. As a rule, every extra 10 kg costs a few percent of range. Heavier riders will find more tips in our guide E-bike for heavy riders.

Cold weather

Lithium-ion batteries deliver less energy in the cold. Around 0°C, expect roughly 20–30% less range than in summer.

Low tire pressure

Soft tires roll heavily. Fat tires feel comfortable at low pressure; however, that comfort costs range on asphalt.

Headwind and high speed

Air resistance grows quickly with speed. Riding a bit slower, especially into the wind, therefore saves a surprising amount of energy.

7 tips to get the most out of your battery

  1. Pedal along, even lightly. Light pedalling with low assist is the single best way to extend your range.
  2. Start in a low assist level. The S600 PRO has five levels (PAS 1–5). Save the higher ones for hills and headwind.
  3. Use your gears. The Shimano 7-speed gears help the motors work efficiently, so shift down before a climb.
  4. Check your tire pressure weekly. Use a higher pressure for roads and a lower one for sand or snow.
  5. Accelerate smoothly. Full power from standstill uses much more energy than a gradual start.
  6. Keep the battery warm in winter. Store and charge it indoors, and fit it just before you ride.
  7. Carry the charger on long trips. A one-hour coffee stop adds useful kilometres.

How to look after a 1200Wh battery

A well-treated battery lasts for years. The S600 PRO battery is rated for more than 1,500 charge cycles and keeps at least 80% of its capacity after 18 months. In addition, these habits help the most:

  • Charge at room temperature, never directly after a ride in freezing cold.
  • Avoid running it completely empty. Instead, recharge when it reaches around 20%.
  • Store it at 40–60% charge if you don’t ride for several weeks, for example in winter.
  • Keep it dry and out of direct sun when not in use.
  • Plan your charging time. A full charge takes about 6 hours with the included charger.

Is a 1200Wh battery worth it?

For most riders, yes. A bigger battery removes range anxiety, which is the main worry people have before buying an e-bike. As a result, you can ride further, use more power on hills, and charge less often.

The Shengmilo S600 PRO combines a 1200Wh battery with two 1000W motors, full suspension and fat tires, for €1,389 with free delivery in 3–7 working days. Need even more range? Then compare it in our guide S600 PRO vs S900 PRO, because the S900 PRO carries a 2100Wh battery.
